Due to the not so high quality of the latest entries of the franchise (you can read here our review of the latest Chucky film Cult of Chucky (2017)), perhaps the Child’s Play film series is not the most awaited one by horror fans craving for classic revivals. Maybe that is why the producers of the reboot Child’s Play (2019), coming out next summer, are already displaying a social media marketing campaign to wash off the face of the evil doll in order to re-win the old audience and get new one. And, so far, it seems that they are getting what they wanted, since their collection of virtual postcards, mobile desktop backgrounds, customized videos and several other new media free graphical gifts are catching some attention. All based on the Christmas season, and like if it was a new innocent toy character, this “Good Guy” dolls “Buddi” is being presented in society.
In the reboot, and as it happened in the original movie Child’s Play (1988), a mother gives her son Andy a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its sinister nature. And who is going to be the evil spirit to possess the wicked doll this time? Because nor Brad Dourif, who has voiced Chucky along the whole original saga, Alex Vincent as the original Andy, Don Mancini as the creator of the character, or the latest installment stars Jennifer Tilly, Fiona Dourif and Christine Elise are not involved in this new movie.
Lars Klevberg, an awarded filmmaker with his short film Polaroid (2015), is set to direct Child’s Play (2019) with a screenplay penned by Tyler Burton Smith. Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry, David Lewis, Gabriel Bateman, Nicole Anthony, Ty Consiglio, Kristin York, Marlon Kazadi, Carlease Burke and Beatrice Kitsos are starring. And this time Chucky is said to be a technologically advanced smart toy who’s AI is tampered with to have no limitations to learning or violence.
