Chris Hemsworth returns as the action hero in Netflix’s “Extraction 2”

The Russo Brothers, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, are well known in the Marvel universe for being the directors of the hit movies Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), and also the producers of one of the most essential movies of the last year, Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), joined forces with Netflix to co-write and produce a new franchise a couple of years ago with Extraction (2020), an action-thriller, centering on a fearless black market mercenary who must rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. The movie was based on the graphic novel “Ciudad” by Ande Parks and was the debut feature film by Sam Hargrave. Chris Hemsworth, a familiar of the filmmakers thanks to his role as Thor in the MCU, was the hero of the film.

This year, the team has been back together to bring out the sequel, Extraction 2 (2023). The movie is set after the events of the previous film when Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is assigned to rescue his ex-wife’s sister Ketevan and her children who are imprisoned by her gangster husband Davit Radiani in the world’s deadliest prison. During the extraction, Davit gets killed and his overprotected brother Zurab sets out to track down Tyler in order to exact vengeance.

Sam Hargrave, a former stunts artist and coordinator who participated in blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), Drive Angry (2011), Conan the Barbarian (2011), In Time (2011), The Avengers (2012), The Wolverine (2013), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), Suicide Squad (2016), Atomic Blonde (2017), and Thor: Ragnarok (2017), repeats as the director of the film with the Russo Brothers producing via their banner AGBO.

Alongside Chris Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani, Adam Bessa, Olga Kurylenko, Tinatin Dalakishvili, Andro Jafaridze, Daniel Bernhardt, Tornike Gogrichiani, Levan Saginashvili, George Lasha, and Idris Elba complete the main cast.

Extraction 2 (2023) is Rated R for strong/bloody violence throughout and language. On June 13, 2023, the movie had a limited theatrical release in the United States where it received mostly positive reviews. Netflix will release it as part of the Netflix Originals catalog on June 16, 2023.
