Andy Lau is one of the most famous action stars in productions from China and Hong Kong. Popular for House of Flying Daggers (2004) and the Infernal Affairs film saga, some people have called him the Asian Tom Cruise for the fact that he seems to never age and is always up for starring the most spectacular action sequences. One of his latest movies is Shock Wave 2 (2020), which is having this month an international release.
In Shock Wave 2 (2020), when a bomb went off unexpectedly during a police operation to disarm it, Poon Shing-Fung, a bomb disposal officer, got caught in the blast and thus lost one of his legs. Poon decided to leave the police service. Three years later, the police suspect Poon, who was found in a coma at the spot of a terrorist bombing attack, of being involved in several bombing attacks in the past two years. Poon can hardly remember his past and even his own identity due to Post Traumatic Amnesia. He plans to escape to find out the truth. Meanwhile, knowing the terrorist organization’s schemes of destroying Hong Kong landmarks, Poon, as the key person between the police and the terrorist organization, would possibly save or destroy the lives of the innocent civilians in the city
Despite being billed as a sequel and Andy Lau returning as a bomb specialist, this movie has nothing to do with the original film, Shock Wave (2017). Herman Yau, a very prolific action films director also responsible for Ip Man: The Final Fight (2013), has directed both films.
The screenplay for Shock Wave 2 (2020) has been written by the director Herman Yau and his frequent collaborators Erica Li and Eric Lee. Together with Andy Lau, Sean Lau, Ni Ni, Kwan-Ho Tse, Ron Ng, and Kenny Wong also star.
Deadline Hollywood called the film “a sense of spectacle and drama. Each bomb disposal scene comes with its own inventive twist, either shocking or darkly humorous enough to make you exclaim out loud”.
As an appetizer, here you can watch a short clip for the movie entitled “Bullet Train vs Bullet Train”.
Shock Wave 2 (2020) will be available on demand on Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, and other cable systems, as well as DirecTV, Dish Network, AT&T U-Verse, and Sling TV on November 2, 2021. Watch here its trailer.
