There is no doubt than Indonesian horror and action films are a raising value internationally. Perhaps, one of the most outstanding names in the film industry of the Asian country is Timo Tjahjanto, with his two hits of last year May The Devil Take You (aka Sebelum Iblis Menjemput) (2018) [read our review] and The Night Comes for Us (2018) [read our review], but the number of Indonesian productions nowadays are very numerous and with high quality. Today we’ll talk about Impetigore (2019), or Perempuan Tanah Jahanam in original Indonesian language.
Impetigore (2019) is the new movie from Indonesian writer and director Joko Anwar. Despite his young age, the filmmaker has achieved a wide list of nominations and awards in numerous film festivals and has been responsible for titles like The Forbidden Door (2009), Ritual (2012), or Satan’s Slaves (2017). This year he also has another movie scheduled to release, which is expected to be one of the summer biggest hits in its territory, the superhero comic book adaptation Gundala (2019).
In Impetigore (2019), after surviving a murder attempt in the city, Maya, a down-on-her-luck young woman, learns that she may inherit a house in her ancestral village. With her friend Dini, Maya returns to the village of her birth, unaware that the community has been trying to locate and kill her to remove the curse that has plagued the village for years. As she begins to discover the complicated reality about her past, Maya finds herself in a fight for her life.
Impetigore (2019) is starred by Tara Basro, a frequent star in Joko Anwar movies. Together with her, Ario Bayu, Marissa Anita, Christine Hakim, Asmara Abigail, Kiki Narendra, Zidni Hakim, Faradina Mufti, Abdurrahman Arif, and Mian Tiara form the main cast. The movie is scheduled to open in theaters in Indonesia the 17th of October this year.
