South by Southwest Film Festival – SXSW has become one of the key festivals to check out which films are to look for in the current year. In the last years, the festival, taking place in Austin, Texas, has had notable world premieres like Insidious (2010), The Cabin in the Woods (2011), Baby Driver (2017), Atomic Blonde (2017) and A Quiet Place (2018). One of the movies to premiere this year was horror and comedy Villains (2019).
Villains (2019) is set as a home invasion film, but it filled with dark comedy. It tells the story of after a pair of amateur criminals who break into a suburban home where they stumble upon a dark secret that two sadistic homeowners will do anything to keep from getting out. Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, the tandem responsible for horror and thriller titles Body (2015) and The Stakelander (2016), the sequel of vampires flick Stake Land (2010), have written and directed it.
Bill Skarsgård, turned already into an horror icon thanks to his performer of Pennywise in the recent IT adaptations, is the main attraction of Villains (2019), together with Maika Monroe, considered one of the new generation “scream queen” after her performances in the critically acclaimed films The Guest (2014) and It Follows (2014). Alongside them, Jeffrey Donovan, Kyra Sedgwick, Blake Baumgartner, Noah Robbins, Danny Johnson, and Nikolas Kontomanolis also star.
Villains (2019) had its world premiere the 9th of March at South by Southwest Film Festival, where it was nominated for the SXSW Film Design Award. After that, it’s been part of the line-up of other American film festivals like Annapolis Film Festival, Lighthouse International Film Festival, Cinepocalypse, and Scary Movies Lincoln Center, where it has achieved a quite positive reception. The 20th of September it is scheduled to come out in the USA market.
