It was supposed to be one of the hit releases of the spring but it kept getting pushed further into dates. Finally, the definitive release date for the action thriller Bullet Train (2022) is set for this weekend worldwide, although the movie has had already a premiere in July in several selected cities.
The movie is an adaptation of the novel Maria Beetle written by the popular Japanese author of mystery fiction Kōtarō Isaka. The book was already adapted as a stage play in Japan in February 2018, and now it is the turn for the Hollywood take.
The story centers on trained killer Ladybug who wants to give up the life but is pulled back in by his handler Maria Beetle in order to collect a briefcase on a bullet train heading from Tokyo to Morioka. Onboard are fellow assassins Kimura, the Prince, Tangerine, and Lemon. Once boarded, he and the other competing assassins onboard discover that their objectives are all connected.
Brad Pitt plays the role of Ladybug, while Sandra Bullock is Maria Beetle. The rest of the main cast is formed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Zazie Beetz, Joey King, Logan Lerman, Michael Shannon, Brian Tyree Henry, Hiroyuki Sanada, Karen Fukuhara, and Andrew Koji.
Bullet Train (2022) has been produced and directed by David Leitch, a former stunt artist who’s had a long working relationship with Brad Pitt being his stunt double in multiple films including Fight Club (1999), Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Troy (2004) and Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005). He debuted behind the cameras with his uncredited directing job in John Wick (2014) which was followed by his solo debut in Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019). Zak Olkewicz, one of the writers of Fear Street: Part Two – 1978 (2021), has been in charge of the screenplay.
Antoine Fuqua with his banner Fuqua Films is producing together with 87North Productions and Columbia Pictures. Sony Pictures Releasing has the distribution rights for Bullet Train (2022).
