October, the moth of Halloween, is the ost popular month for horror movies and the people from Blumhouse Productions are well aware of that. As they did with some of their hit movies Halloween (2018), Happy Death Day (2017), The Craft: Legacy (2020), and Halloween Kills (2021), the month is set for releaseing new titles targeted to the horror lovers. And, one of the titles for this year is Totally Killer (2023).
The movie is set when the infamous “Sweet Sixteen Killer” returns 35 years after his first murder spree to claim another victim. 17-year-old Jamie accidentally travels back in time to 1987 and is determined to stop the killer before he can start.
After watching the trailer and despite the references to a time-traveling classic like Back to the Future (1985), Totally Killer (2023) seems to follow the asthetics and tone of other modern horror slasher films like The Babysitter (2017), Happy Death Day (2017) and its sequel Happy Death Day 2U (2019).
Kiernan Shipka, known for her roles of Sally Draper in the popular TV series Mad Men (2007–2015), the title role in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018–2020), and the movies Carriers (2009) and The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015) plays the main role in Totally Killer (2023). Olivia Holt, Charlie Gillespie, Lochlyn Munro, Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson, Liana Liberato, Kelcey Mawema, Stephi Chin-Salvo, Anna Diaz, and Ella Choi complete the main cast.
Nahnatchka Khan, a 2-times Primetime Emmy Awards nominee as the producer for American Dad! (2005–) and also behind the romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe (2019) debuts as the director of a horror film with Totally Killer (2023). The screenplay has been written by David Matalon (The Clearing (2020)), Sasha Perl-Raver (Let’s Get Merried (2021)), and Jen D’Angelo (Workaholics (2011–2017)).
Totally Killer (2023) is Rated R for bloody violence, language, sexual material, and teen drug/alcohol use. Before its release on Amazon Prime Video on October 6, 2023, it is going to be part of the line-ups of the American film festivals Fantastic Fest and Popcorn Frights Film Festival.
