Georgina Campbell in Barbarian (2022)

Horror thriller Barbarian (2022) has been screened in some film festivals and the audience that has been lucky enough to see it claims that it is one of the scariest cinematographic experiences of the year. The general plot for the movie is so simple and mundane that it could happen to any one of us. A woman staying at an Airbnb discovers that the house she has rented is not what it seems.

The movie centers on a young woman traveling to Detroit for a job interview who books a rental home. But when she arrives late at night, she discovers that the house is double booked, and a strange man is already staying there. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the evening but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.

The movie has been written and directed by actor and filmmaker Zach Cregger, who also plays a supporting role in the film. He is better known for being responsible with his pal the late Trevor Moore of several comedy films and shows including Miss March (2009), The Civil War on Drugs (2011), and The Whitest Kids U’Know (2007–2011) TV series. Barbarian (2022) marks his debut in the horror genre.

Georgina Campbell is the star of the film and is accompanied by two big names in the genre: Bill Skarsgård, who has been scaring the younger generations with his performance of the evil Pennywise in the new IT saga and has also participated in Villains (2019) and Atomic Blonde (2017), and Richard Brake, a regular in the recent Rob Zombie pics (Halloween II (2009), 31 (2016), 3 from Hell (2019), and the upcoming The Munsters (2022)) and also notorious for Doom (2005) and Hannibal Rising (2007). Justin Long of Jeepers Creepers (2001) and Tusk (2014) fame, Matthew Patrick Davis, Kurt Braunohler, Jaymes Butler, and Kate Bosworth complete the main cast.

Barbarian (2022) is Rated R for some strong violence and gore, disturbing material, language throughout, and nudity. It had its premiere at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con on July 22, 2022, and it was later part of FrightFest in August. It is scheduled to be theatrically released on September 9, 2022, by 20th Century Studios and New Regency.
