Carnifex (2022) has been described as an eco-thriller horror. The title is derived from the Latin scientific and zoological genus name for the extinct Australian mega-fauna species of ‘Thylacoleo Carnifex’. It centers on an aspiring documentarian and two conservationists who venture into the Outback to record the animals displaced by bushfires where they discover a terrifying new species.
As Australia recovers from unprecedented bushfires, Bailey an aspiring documentary filmmaker joins conservationists Grace and Ben ¡as they travel deep into the Australian outback to track and record the animals left displaced and devastated by the fires. As night falls, the trio discovers a terrifying species and quickly becomes the ones being tracked.
This is the debut feature film of Sean Lahiff, who has achieved some awards with his short films and editing feature films. Shanti Gudgeon, who has been a writer for the TV shows Wolf Creek (2016–2017) and Nowhere Boys (2013–2018), is the author of the screenplay.
The main cast in Carnifex (2022) is formed by Alexandra Park, Sisi Stringer, Harry Greenwood, Brendan Rock, and Darren Gilshenan.
The movie is the first theatrical feature film of the production company Dancing Road Productions. will have an official associated tie-in video game with the same name the license for which has been attained by the Mighty Kingdom company. The director of Dancing Road Productions, Gena Ashwell, has said, “we have very much enjoyed collaborating with Mighty Kingdom to bring Carnifex (2022) to gamers around the world. For our audiences, this means a bigger experience – the game does not re-tread the paths of the film but will take players on an expanded adventure to uncover more of the Carnifex (2022) story“.
Carnifex (2022) had its premiere at the Sitges Film Festival in October 2022, and it also was part of the Adelaide Film Festival in Australia. After an Australian theatrical release, now it can be found as part of the Tubi Originals digital catalog.
