With many referents of the horror and gore pictures of the 1980s, including Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead saga, PussyCake (2021) is a film that combines the feelings of a road movie with some comedy and lots, and I mean lots, of gore and splattery.
The movie centers on a struggling all-girl rock band that kicks off a new tour, hoping to rekindle their popularity. Things are off to a bad start, however, when they show up to their first gig to find the town deserted. After they catch the attention of horrors from beyond our reality, the band realizes that being forgotten by their fans is the least of their problems.
This is the new effort of Pablo Parés, a man who has dedicated his film career to the arts of horror and gore being behind titles like Jennifer’s Shadow (2004), Plaga Zombie: Zona Mutante: Revolución Tóxica (2011), Daemonium: Underground Soldier (2015), I Am Toxic (2018), and a very long list of short films. He has also been the creator of the story together with Hernan Moyano. Maxi Ferzzola wrote the screenplay.
With the original title Emesis in it’s Spanish version, the movie is starring Flor Moreno, Anahí Politi, Sofia Rossi, Aldana Ruberto, and Macarena Suárez.
PussyCake (2021) had its premiere at the Fantaspoa festival where it was described as “pure, uncut Midnighter fodder […] Absolutely frantic, manic, nonsensical and off the wall“. This year, it was also part of the Night Visions Film Festival in Finland and the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland.
The movie premiered on the all-horror streaming service Screambox on August 30, 2022. Bloody Disgusting, who are now powering the service, shared its official American release trailer.
Enjoy :).
