Andy Garcia joins "Iron Sky: The Ark"

Remember 5 years ago when the Earth was shocked about that little Finnish film about the Nazis set up a secret base on the dark side of the moon in 1945 where they hide out and plan to return to power in 2018? Yes, that wonderful flick called Iron Sky (2012) became an instant classic for science fiction and horror fans thirsty for seeing how such a plot could be taken to the extreme. Director Timo Vuorensola said he would make the film only if they got Udo Kier to act in it and Laibach to make the soundtrack. Those two joined and the rest is history.

Well, lots have been speculated since then. The plot ideas of the sequels, bringing dinosaurs and zombified dead or alive historical characters like Sarah Pallin, Margaret Thatcher, Kim Jong-Un, Mark Zuckerberg, Vladimir Putin, Mao Zedong, Stalin, Genghis Khan, Caligula, Osama bin Laden and Steve Jobs added more gasoline to the fire of us the fans craving for more Iron Sky. This sequel, entitled Iron Sky: The Coming Race (2018), will have the world premiere next February at the BerlinaleBerlin International Film Festival.

Recently we have known that the third installment of the Iron Sky saga is also in a filming status. And the fans of the Nazis from outer space can be happy, because besides the appearance of veteran actor Udo Kier, essential in all the three movies, as the Grand Master, Hollywood star Andy Garcia has also joined the production. Iron Sky: The Ark (2018) is about two Chinese university dropout audiophiles who set out on a quest to decode a mysterious message received from the Moon, but quickly find themselves fighting against the mother of all conspiracy theories – The Illuminati.

In the words of director Timo Vuorensola, taken from the official Iron Sky website http://ironsky.net, “The moon has always mystified me. Cracking its secrets has been one of mankind’s longest scientific journeys, a journey we’ve barely begun, but science fiction writers and filmmakers have been on the case far longer than me. My first film placed Nazis on the Moon and now with Iron Sky: The Ark, we will journey deeper into the core, combining Chinese mythology with science fiction action. To me, Iron Sky is not just a fun outlet for science fiction action, crazy characters and wicked plots – it’s also a vehicle to discuss the world we live in. Iron Sky: The Ark is set in the aftermath of a man-made ecological crisis and humanity’s attempts in trying to solve the mess we’ve made. Making a film in China has long been my dream. Having watched many Hong Kong action films from the 80’s and 90’s in my youth (on badly pirated VHS tapes, mind you), and later getting to know modern Chinese film, it’s an amazing gift to now truly get to work within the Chinese film industry”.
