Andrea Riseborough is building a solid career with firm steps and without a hurry. After being present in action and science-fiction Tom Cruise vehicle Oblivion (2013), the delicious fantasy comedy Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014), and kidnapping mystery flick Nancy (2018), she played the role that has launched high on the list of the most venerated horror performers nowadays, Mandy Bloom in Panos Cosmatos’ superb Mandy (2018), alongside an out of control Nicolas Cage. Next year she will also take part in the new entry of the horror saga The Grudge (2020), and yesterday it was announced that she has been chosen to star supernatural thriller Geechee.
Now, let’s have a little background history input. The Gullah are African Americans who live in the Lowcountry region of the U.S. states of Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina, in both the coastal plain and the Sea Islands. They developed a creole language, the Gullah language, and a culture rich in African influences that makes them distinctive among African Americans. Historically, the Gullah region extended from the Cape Fear area on North Carolina’s coast south to the vicinity of Jacksonville on Florida’s coast. Today, the Gullah area is confined to the Georgia and South Carolina Lowcountry. The Gullah people and their language are also called Geechee, which may be derived from the name of the Ogeechee River near Savannah, Georgia.
In the upcoming movie Geechee, Andrea Riseborough will star as Wren, a successful New York scientist who decides to leave the city with her son to start life over in the remote Sea Islands off the Atlantic Coast. She quickly falls in love with the land and the people on the secluded island, but soon her world starts to unravel as the souls of the subjugated begin to haunt her dreams and her waking life.
Geechee will be the feature picture debut of filmmaker DuBois Ashong, better known for his awards-winner science-fiction thriller Where the Water Runs (2018). AGC Studios will finance and produce the film, which filming is planned on starting in early 2020. The people from AGC stated “from treatment to script, Dubois has created a terrific supernatural thriller that is only elevated by the addition of the amazing Andrea Riseborough”.
