Half a decade ago, the filmmakers Luciano Onetti and Nicolás Onetti came out with a dusty horror movie What the Waters Left Behind (2017) heavily inspired by classics of the genre like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) or The Hills Have Eyes (1977). The movie became a popular title in horror festivals. Now, a new story is arising with What the Waters Left Behind: Scars (2022).
This time, the story centers on an Anglo-American indie rock band touring throughout Argentina that ends up stranded in the desolate city of Epecuén. The conflicts between themselves and this sudden bad luck on their tour are quickly forgotten when they begin to discover the bloody hell that awaits them.
Nicolás Onetti, also responsible for Abrakadabra (2018), The 100 Candles Game (2020), The Red Book Ritual (2022), and The Last Boy on Earth (2023), is directing the film solo this time. His frequent collaborator Camilo Zaffora has been in charge of the screenplay.
Agustin Olcese, Clara Kovacic, Magui Bravi, Eugenia Rigón, Matías Desiderio, Juan Pablo Bishel, Germán Baudino, Chucho Fernández, Mario Alarcón, and David Michigan form the main cast.
What the Waters Left Behind: Scars (2022) was part of the genre film festivals Sitges Film Festival, Blood Window Film Festival, BIFFF – Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, Cine Fantasy Film Festival, Obscura Filmfestival Berlin, and Horrorant Film Festival. Cleopatra Entertainment is releasing the movie on DVD and on digital platforms on July 18, 2023.
