It might have a plot we have seen many times, with a group of youngsters behaving irresponsibly, ingesting lots of alcohol, and having promiscuous and perhaps too excessively adventurous attitudes, but that never stopped anyone from enjoying what is shown on the screen. Shark Bait (2022) is one of those movies with the well-known ingredients, very few surprises, but the horrifying tension that being surrounded by the aquatic predators always brings.
In the movie, a group of spring breakers is enjoying the trip of a lifetime on the sandy beaches of Mexico. As the sun rises after a night of partying, they steal a couple of jet skis and race out to sea. But bravado and bad decisions lead to a terrifying accident. Stranded miles from shore, the true horror begins when the group realizes they’ve drifted into shark-infested waters. With no way back and one friend badly bleeding, the group must quickly figure out how to survive the predator lurking in the waters below.
This is the new movie from director James Nunn after being behind the action-oriented thrillers One Shot (2021), The Marine 6: Close Quarters (2018), The Marine 5: Battleground (2017), Eliminators (2016), Green Street 3: Never Back Down (2013), and Tower Block (2012). And he is not a stranger in the horror-shark subgenre, since he has been the second unit director in 47 Meters Down (2017) and its sequel 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019). Nick Saltrese, known for being one of the the writers in crime TV series EastEnders (1985– ), The Bill (1984–2010), and Brookside (1982–2003), has penned the screenplay.
The main cast in Shark Bait (2022) is formed by Holly Earl, Jack Trueman, Catherine Hannay, Malachi Pullar-Latchman, Thomas Flynn, and Manuel Cauchi.
