The Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, France, and United Kingdom production The Innocents (2021), also known as De uskyldige in the Norwegian language, has the headline “playtime takes a dangerous turn”. And soon we’ll see why.
The movie centers on four children who become friends during the summer holidays, and out of sight of the adults, they discover they have hidden powers. While exploring their newfound abilities in the nearby forests and playgrounds, their innocent play takes a dark turn and strange things begin to happen.
This is the new movie from writer, producer, and director Eskil Vogt, who is better known for his Oscar-nominated screenplay for The Worst Person in the World (2021) and the text for horror fantasy Thelma (2017), both films directed by Joachim Trier. The Innocents (2021) is his second feature after Sundance and Berlinale awards-winner Blind (2014).
Rakel Lenora Fløttum, Alva Brynsmo Ramstad, Sam Ashraf, Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Morten Svartveit, Kadra Yusuf, Lisa Tønne, and Irina Eidsvold Tøien form the main cast for The Innocents (2021).
The movie had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 11 July 2021. After that, it was also part of the line-up of international festivals including Norwegian International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, Zurich Film Festival, Film Fest Gent, Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, Fantasy Filmfest, Philadelphia International Film Festival, Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, Gothenburg Film Festival, and Istanbul Film Festival.
