One of the big titles for Netflix to release this month is the drama and psychological thriller The Wonder (2022), a tale of two strangers who transform each other’s lives, a psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.
The movie is set in The Irish Midlands in 1862, the story follows a young girl who stops eating but remains miraculously alive and well. English nurse Lib Wright is brought to a tiny village to observe eleven-year-old Anna O’Donnell. Tourists and pilgrims mass to witness the girl who is said to have survived without food for months. Is the village harboring a saint “surviving on manna from heaven” or are there more ominous motives at work?
This is an adaptation of the novel The Wonder by Emma Donoghue, the author whose screenplay for the drama thriller Room (2015) got her an Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards nomination. Awards-winner Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio, known for his dramas The Sacred Family (2005), Gloria (2013), A Fantastic Woman (2017), and Gloria Bell (2018), is directing the movie from a screenplay that he also wrote together with Alice Birch, a Primetime Emmy Awards nominee for Normal People (2020) and BAFTA Awards nominee for Lady Macbeth (2016).
The main role in The Wonder (2022) is played by Florence Pugh, the Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards nominee for Little Women (2019) and is better known for her intense role in Midsommar (2019). Tom Burke, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Niamh Algar, David Wilmot, Ruth Bradley, Toby Jones, Dermot Crowley, and Ciarán Hinds also star.
After its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2022, The Wonder (2022) has also taken part in the Toronto International Film Festival, San Sebastián International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, and Grand Lyon Film Festival.
